Dear Churchwardens, PCC secretaries and all,

I hope you are able to enjoy the sunshine that we have had and find some good amidst our current restrictions.

Here are some snippets of news from around the Benefice this week; do please send me items to share for next weekend. It’s great that people are finding creative ways to care for their neighbours. Have you begun to wonder how society could change for the better as a result of our shared challenges? Have you found people want to talk about significant things? Although today is a day off for me, I wore a clerical collar when going shopping today and people queuing to shop and at the till talked about how they wanted churches open to pray in and more.

For Sunday here is a service of morning prayer, plus the readings to accompany this, a short reflection on the gospel reading from John and intercessions written by Jenni. These could be used at home on your own, but for the adventurous we are trying something I’d never heard of a week ago: we are holding a Facebook Watch Party. Those who have joined Facebook and The Rutland Water Benefice group can log on to Facebook, at 9.30am on Sunday morning, to watch a video of the service, together with Jenni leading the intercessions and John’s talk too. Doing this together I’m told we are able to contribute to the Party by typing in comments, so can share requests for prayer etc. Joining is far more straightforward than I’d thought, so why not be brave and try to do so . . . .

And do let me know if doing what we can online is helpful for you. How you are trying to support those who do not access online material?

GATES – FARM SHOP AND GARDEN CENTRE

The Farm Shop

The Farm Shop remains open for telephone orders and collections only, but is now closed to customers. This is to protect both customers and staff, and to enable them to continue to offer a service as best they can, but as safely as possible. So if you wish to purchase items from the Farm Shop, please do not turn up without having pre-ordered.

Orders are taken over the phone, with a member of staff walking round telling you what is in stock in whichever sections you are interested in, and filling a trolley with your shopping, ready for you to collect.

Payment is made over the phone. We have been offering a delivery service, but this has now come to an end simply because we do not have the capacity (vehicles/drivers/refrigeration) to meet the demand, and we want to focus the energies of our staff on serving as many of you as possible.

So we are requesting that customers collect, or share collections with other neighbours. On arrival at Gates, items will be put straight into the boot of your car so no contact is necessary.

The Garden Centre

The Garden centre itself is closed to the public, but items can be ordered over the phone, as above for collection. This includes plants, seeds, gardening tools, pots, etc as well as greeting cards, gifts, children’s puzzels and toys, outdoor games, books, small garden furniture, etc. If anyone is wishing to buy larger items, for example BBQs, large garden furniture, etc this can still be delivered.

We have some information about plants etc on our website, but if you are looking for anything else, just ring us and you will be put through to someone in the relevant department.

Fruit and Vegetable Orders – Faulkners

Fruit and Vegetable Orders

Not sure if everyone is aware but Faulkner’s,  the fruit and veg stall on the market in Oakham and Uppingham,  is running a new service whereby you can email an order in to them, they will make it up, give you a call or text with collection time.

Payment can be via BACS, card or cash.  I’ve sent in an order and will see how it goes tomorrow.

Community Medicines Collection Scheme

Rutland County Council and NHS set this scheme up asking that each village has a co-ordinator to organise the collection of prescriptions in such a way as to minimise visits to the pharmacy. On that basis, unless there is an emergency, I would suggest that we have one collection a week from each of Uppingham and Oakham surgeries.

Alison is kindly going to Oakham today – March 26th
Richard is collecting from Uppingham today – March 26th.

The idea of the scheme is that villagers let me know by email (debrathatcher@hotmail.com) or by phone 01572 823910 that they have ordered a prescription. For the purposes of the paperwork, I need to log with the Council on a daily basis the following:

I do not need to know what ailment is being treated nor what the medicines are. For those people of an age where they need to pay for prescriptions they must obtain a pre-payment certificate from the NHS – details can be found on their website using the following link –  https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/buy-prescription-prepayment-certificate/start

Please remember to order prescriptions at least 72 hours before the prescription is required.

We will need a volunteer each week to undertake the collection and delivery/deliveries once back in the village. I need to advise the surgery who is attending, when and for whom they are collecting.

In addition, I then need confirmation once the delivery/deliveries has/have been made as the Council want a full log to be kept.

Parish and Town Council briefing

Further to today’s Parish and Town Council briefing call, please find below the requested information.

1. Information on bus changes: https://www.rutland.gov.uk/my-services/health-and-family/health-and-nhs/health-and-support-services/coronavirus-covid-19/council-building-closures-and-opening-hours/

2. Guidance regarding takeaways: Takeaway and delivery facilities should remain open and operational. This means people can continue to enter premises to access takeaway services, including delivery drivers. Businesses are encouraged to take orders online or by telephone, and businesses should not provide seating areas, indoors and outdoors, for customers to consume food and drink on. Ordering in advance is strongly encouraged to avoid waiting in, as per Public Health England guidelines. Planning regulation has been changed to enable restaurants, cafés and pubs which do not currently offer delivery and hot food takeaway to do so. People must not consume food or drinks on site at restaurants, cafés or pubs whilst waiting for takeaway food. Rutland County Council putting plans in place

Covid-19 Update

Rutland County Council is putting plans in place to support new government guidance around “shielding” for people who are at significantly higher risk from coronavirus (COVID-19).

The NHS is currently in the process of writing to anyone who is considered to be ‘extremely vulnerable’ because they have a serious underlying health condition.

Shielding is the practice being recommended to protect these extremely vulnerable people from COVID-19. Anyone who receives a letter through the post is strongly advised to stay at home at all times and avoid any face-to-face contact for at least 12 weeks.

Shielding differs from the social distancing guidance that we are all being asked to follow because it advises people with a serious underlying health condition to remain at home, not to leave and to avoid all contact with other people for a considerable period of time. The implications for these extremely vulnerable people are clear; while some will have friends, family or neighbours who may be able to help, there will be others who need to have food, medicines and other supplies provided to them until they can leave home again. We are already putting plans in place with businesses and other local partners that will allow us to provide direct support to anyone who is being shielded and needs our help.

Rutland County Council is continuing to work with local NHS and Primary Care services in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rutland’s four GP practices have made significant changes to the way they work in order to reduce the infection risk to patients.

If you are worried that you may have COVID-19 symptoms (a high temperature or continuous cough), do not go to your local GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Instead, you should self-isolate and visit the NHS 111 website if you need a fit note for your employer.

No patients should visit their local GP unless they have already spoken to the surgery. If you need a consultation with a GP or other healthcare professional, this will be done by telephone or video after you have arranged an appointment through your GP’s website or over the phone.

Statement from The Parish Council

Covid-19 Update

With reference to the current situation in relation to Covid-19 and the impact upon our Parish.

The Parish Council will lead a co-ordinated approach to provide a community support system for all Parishioners.

Purpose – To ensure no-one in the village is left unsupported during the Covid 19 epidemic.
Focus – Anyone living / staying in Ridlington parish. Coordination – Scheme coordinated by the parish council but operated by volunteers.

General approach – An active approach in which volunteers call on neighbours either electronically, by telephone or shout over the garden wall if necessary to actively seek ways to give them support.

The volunteer Street Reps to communicate together through a “WhatsApp” group.

By communicating on the WhatsApp group, problems can be resolved by the volunteers working together. If this App was open to all residents who owned a smart phone it may become bogged down by hearsay and triviality that is not needed. The Parish council will receive updates from Rutland County Council on a daily basis. This information can be sent to volunteers for communicating to neighbours.

Suggested areas to seek ‘street reps’;

  • Holygate Road = 14 households
  • West Lane / upper Main St, to no.15 = 10 households Church Lane / middle Main St = 12 households
  • Lower Main St, no.27 to no.41 = 9 households
  • East Lane = 8 households
  • Hannah’s Field = 11 households
  • The Green, Noel Lane, Top Rd = 11 households
  • Outlying lodges (Bancroft, Dalbys, Rowells, Nooks) = 4 households

I am looking for volunteers for each area as described above, more than one volunteer is beneficial in sharing the work load and for discussing resolutions to problems.

I will set up a WhatsApp group and add you to it. If you don’t have a smart phone, send your email address. If you don’t have any digital platform to communicate it will potentially be difficult to share information with you as we will shortly be in isolation and refraining from direct person to person contact. There is of course telephone use, but this could be time consuming, someone ringing round and I don’t want one person to be encumbered.

The format of this initiative will evolve as it is used and problems resolved. Its not perfect, but its a start.
We have a number of volunteers already, which is excellent. We have the ear of two residents who are busy paramedics. We have the local Baines bakery owners who are willing to satisfy orders.
I don’t have to tell you that the situation will worsen, so by starting now we can develop a dynamic and effective system to respond to the epidemic as it evolves.
The current information from Rutland County Council to the Parish Council is that

  • There are no tested, confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Rutland at present. There are numerous cases of residents self –isolating.
  • Rutland County Council have activated their emergency plan and are scaling down non-essential services to concentrate on priority services and the most vulnerable.
  • RCC website is the best place to obtain the most up to date information.
  • The castle and museum are closed and the library will likely follow shortly.
  • RCC will hold weekly conference calls with Parishes and issue daily briefings.
  • A register of volunteer groups within Parishes is being collated

The registering of Voluntary groups will allow resources from a County Council level, if such assistance is needed. I will be in contact with Rutland Council on a daily basis and will pass on relevant information.
